Those who are new to wizard studies wonder what the purposes for their academic robes are. There actually is a purpose behind them, besides keeping with traditions that date back further than the days of Merlin. When we put on our robes we want to honor those wizards that come before us and part of the way that we do that is to not only wear academic robes, as the wizards of old used to, but wear the same style of robes they wore. We have not changed our robes for many centuries to help us to remember the sacrifices of blood, sweat and tears that the wizards of old made for us.

Please keep in mind that although we do like to adhere to our traditions, such as with the academic robes that we use, we do not mind a bit of variance with our robes, which is why students are encouraged to deviate from the normal shades of robes, to the more unusual shades. Also, please be sure not to get the ones with the hoods, for those who are unaware, those are not robes those are cloaks.

If you have never been exposed to the wizard world and our traditions, you may wonder, besides tradition, why we use academic robes for our students and for wizards in general. Reason being is that they are considered elegant and regal. They can also hide your wand, potions and spell components. While some spells can be performed by using just your wand and words, most spells require components or ingredients to work properly. If it was just as easy as waving a wand and saying some words, you could learn it out of a book and have no need to attend wizard school.

While the academic robes are traditional, they are also functional as well. They do serve a purpose in our world and in our school. Our robes are a bit different than you will find in the mortal world, as they are thicker and have many pockets, while the ones in the mortal world do not. We use ours for both everyday and ceremonial, but we will cover the ceremonial uses at a later date.

Please take a moment to check out the mortal version of our academic robes in the wizard/mortal museum at the end of the block from the Mystical and Magical Robe Shop. You will see there is a big difference between the two of them. While, in many ways, they are similar, there are many obvious and subtle differences between the two of them. While our robes have pockets, those of the mortal world do not have pockets, nor are they as warm as the ones we use as well. As you will notice, the academic robes of the mortal world are very thin, flimsy things, while academic robes for our purposes are much high quality.
