Canada’s Bet Advances to the Pan American Squash Championship Women’s Final

October 27th, 2009

Toronto-based squash player Tara Mullins easily advanced to the women’s final of the Pan American squash championship after her opponent decided to pull out of their scheduled semifinal clash due to injury. Meanwhile, her compatriot David Phillips of Quebec did not enjoy the same fate as he was sent packing in the semifinal round of the men’s event on Monday.

Mullins was scheduled to face Colombia’s Catalina Pelaez in the semifinals but the latter pulled out after suffering from injury incurred from a previous doubles match.

Mullins will now face Mexico’s Samantha Teran in the final. Teran, currently ranked seventeenth in the world, is the tournament top seed and is heavily favored to win the title. The Mexican player defeated Brazil’s Thaisa Serafini in the other semifinal match.

The Canadian will have to rely on her strategies and impressive gameplay if she wants this match to be of high caliber. Mullins is currently ranked 70th in the world. She participated in last year’s Senior Women’s World Championships and the 2006 Pan American championships team which makes her as competitive as other rivals in the tournament.

Phillips lost to Mexico’s Erick Galvez in a tight four set encounter.

The team event will start later this week and the seedings and the final draw were already determined. The Canadian team is now seeded fourth in both women’s and men’s team events.
