Unlucky River in Poker

April 22nd, 2009

Sometimes when I am playing poker online I think, “oh, woe is me.” I was playing Texas hold ‘em recently at the casino and thought I wa sin a position to rake in a lot of dough. I had raise in the small blind with an 8-8. they were a few limpers in before me who folded, and then one of reraised me. I had not a huge stack of chips left, but one that would have been quite nice if I doubled up. So I thought, let’s try my luck and see what happens. So I called. Well as it turned out the other guy had 5-5. Great. I thought! When the flip came 7-9-2, I was even more ecstatic. Well, of course we all know what happens next. That’s right a five on the river, and I stormed up and down my apartment cursing. This only happens playing poker online I thought, just my luck. I didn’t even see the river card, which could have given me a magical straight or trip 8’s of my own for the win, but of course it didn’t. I felt a great sense of despondency and despair, cursing this cruel universe that would do such a thing to me. If you are going to play this game, you must be able to tolerate the soul-crushing losses, the ones where you do everything right but still lose because of dammned luck. It can be hard sometimes.
